River creatures, comics, and an invitation
See me & my comics at the Providence Public Library on August 28
Dear reader,
Have you spent time with your nearest river lately? Have you gazed at it, kayaked on it, shared a special moment with a waterbird? If not, there is still a sliver of summer left for you to do so. In the meantime, I have some river-related comics to share and a special invitation for those of you in Rhode Island.
Since the beginning of last year, I have been busy as the creative director of Motif - a local arts magazine. One of my favorite projects I developed while there is a comic series in partnership with the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. The WRWC is a non-profit organization working to restore Rhode Island's Woonasquatucket River and help steward the ecosystem through environmental education in the community. The mascot of the environmental education program is a giant stuffed brook trout named "Brookie."

Brookie has had a special place in my heart since I first saw her at an art show in 2022. (My painting is second from the right on the top!) This year I had the opportunity to work with the WRWC to introduce more people to Brookie — in comic form. Now she's not only a mascot, but also the host of Woony Wonders. Sharing knowledge about our local ecosystem in a widely distributed free magazine has been very gratifying; not to mention drawing the fantastic creatures of the watershed.
“What is a watershed?” you may ask…
Woony Wonders #1 has answers.

You’re invited!
The Woony Wonders comic series is part of a fabulous show up now at the Providence Public Library (coolest library ever) curated by the lovely folks at Creature Conserve. We All Live Here Together features an eclectic mix of mediums and perspectives. Come celebrate art, science, and our local ecosystem on Wednesday, August 28 from 5 - 6:30 pm. There will be a performance by Eli Nixon (known for knocking your socks off) and a cyanotype demo by Kim Arthurs. I hope to see you there!
